Determining the mechanical values of a material
Hardness and strength test
These days, simple testing devices enable fast and precise determination of the hardness of a material using a range of different procedures. In many cases, however, this is not enough, as the hardness of a material is not necessarily indicative of its strength.
Hardness tests merely measure resistance against the pressure of indentation exerted by a harder test object. The toughness and mechanical resistance that a material demonstrates against plastic deformation or separation is not taken into consideration. The test strength values that are critical for our purposes are determined by means of tensile and impact tests.
As well as the strength, it is also necessary to determine the rigidity of a material, as the elasticity also plays a role, especially in the dimensioning of profiles. What is interesting is that, in the case of stainless steel, as strain hardening increases, the rigidity of the material decreases. When looking for stainless steel with high strength and rigidity values, it is essential to ensure that the material already has a high basic strength in its annealed state.
